Early 2026
The project completed an initial round of planning and conceptual design to confirm that the scope of the project aligns with the available budget. This work included building conditions assessments, accessibility studies, coordination with other City departments to determine permitting and utility needs, and reexamining the building decarbonization approach proposed in the previous feasibility study.
Based on the initial planning and cost estimates, the base renovation project elements appear to align with our budget of $30.6 million. These elements include upgrading aging building structures, converting building mechanical systems from fossil fuels to electric, improving accessibility, and renovating several interior programming spaces to ensure that the center can continue serving the Loyal Heights community for decades to come. In addition to these, we are hopeful that we can accomplish aesthetic improvements throughout the interior community center, including adding more natural light throughout the building.
We are currently working on more detailed designs and hiring a contractor to provide input on the design process. We plan to host a community meeting to update the public about the project in spring 2026.
Project Description
Loyal Heights Community Center was identified in the 2016 Community Center Strategic plan as a major maintenance project focused on extending the life of the facility and increasing programming potential. In 2020, SPR conducted a feasibility study that determined the structural, electrical, operational, and programmatic needs of the community center. Based on the study, the funding for the renovation work was approved within the current Park District funding cycle.
The renovation project will upgrade aging building structures, convert building mechanical systems from fossil fuels to electric, improve accessibility, and renovate several interior programming spaces to ensure that the center can continue serving the Loyal Heights community for decades to come.
