At the end of 2025, Seattle City Council approved a Council Budget Action (CBA) that increased funding to Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) by $700,000 (from the Park and Recreation Fund) for the construction of a skatedot (i.e., small skatepark) as part of the Morgan Junction Park Addition project. This is funding that was allocated outside of the existing project budget, meaning it is not taking away from the larger park addition design and construction. The funding also ensures that the skatedot will be developed within the existing project schedule, and not at a later phase or on a separate timeline.

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) will continue working with community partner Morgan Junction All Wheels Association (MJAWA) to integrate a skate-dot into the project. SPR is currently working with various City of Seattle Departments on the park expansion project. This inter-departmental work includes addressing site challenges such as right-of-way requirements, drainage considerations, and Street Improvement Plans along California Avenue.
Currently, the design team is working on re-integrating the skatedot into Schematic Design, which includes:

• Identifying minor design updates that take current site conditions into account & adressing site requirements that are triggered by skatedot development such as additional drainage and accessibility improvements.
• Work on removing the contaminant source from the new parcel was completed in 2025. The site has been hydroseeded; the grass is still establishing as of January 2026.

At this stage of the project, the hydroseeding does not cover Eddy Street. The project anticipates fencing can be taken down by mid-spring 2026, at which point the remediated grass area of the park addition will be open to the public (until Phase II construction begins). The remediation work has been more extensive than anticipated, which will impact the subsequent phase(s) of the project. In the meantime, we are working to value-engineer the expansion design and enable a scaled-down Phase 2 of the park development to proceed.

In 2014, Seattle Parks and Recreation purchased the .47-acre property at 6311 California Ave SW, north of Morgan Junction Park, to expand the park and provide additional open space for this high-density neighborhood. The design will incorporate accessibility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and additional park elements will be incorporated after gathering public input. A transfer of jurisdiction ordinance may be required to expand and connect the new site to the existing park.

This project was put on hold during the pandemic when the City of Seattle turned its focus to essential functions to address the immediate social and economic crisis. In Sept. 2022, the Seattle City Council, acting in its role as Seattle Park District Board, passed a new six-year funding plan for the 2023-2028 Park District cycle, which included funding for this project.

The additional parcel and the current Eddy Street ROW will not be accessible during construction.
